Hand hygiene – the first step in tackling antimicrobial resistance
The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the biggest threats to global health. The cost of AMR to the NHS alone is in excess of £180 million. A recent government report found that AMR “continues to increase” despite the drop of prescribed antibiotics by GP’s.
Healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) are contacted while a patient is receiving care for another illness. This increases and extra burden to nursing staff and can increase the risk of AMR through overuse of Antibiotics.
Did you know: 50% to 70% of HCAI’s are transmitted by hands.
